Exhibitions

Beauté Congo: 1926-2015, Congo Kitoko is still on view at Fondation Cartier in Paris, France until January 10, 2016.

A place of extraordinary cultural vitality, the creative spirit of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be honored in the Beauté Congo–1926–2015–Congo Kitoko exhibition presented at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain with André Magnin as Chief Curator. Taking as its point of departure the birth of modern painting in the Congo in the 1920s, this ambitious exhibition will trace almost a century of the country’s artistic production. While specifically focusing on painting, it will also include music, sculpture, photography, and comics, providing the public with the unique opportunity to discover the diverse and vibrant art scene of the region. In conjunction with this exhibition, the Nomadic Nights program of performing arts events will focus upon Congolese contemporary music and dance throughout the duration of the show.

Biennials

Performa 15 is taking place at various locations across New York, United States until November 22, 2015.

Since 2004, Performa has been a leader in commissioning artists who together shape the next chapter of the multi-century legacy of visual artists working in live performance. Serving as an incubator for artists' projects, Performa encourages new directions for live performance while paying homage to the form's history and making way for its future. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Performa 15 brings together a total of more than 30 artists from 12 countries around the world to participate in a 3-week exciting programme – breaking down the boundaries between visual art, music, dance, poetry, film, and architecture. For each biennial, Performa pays homage to a bygone era through a historical anchor, such as Futurism and Russian Constructivism, showing the prevalence of live art during earlier periods; this year the historic reference is The Renaissance.

The second edition of AFiRIperFOMA biennial will hold in Lagos, Nigeria from November 13 to 27, 2015.

It is a networking and discursive platform for the expansion of contemporary performance/live art in Africa. Following the previous edition in 2013 in Harare, Zimbabwe, this edition will take place between the 13 and 27 of November 2015, in Lagos, Nigeria. It will host local and international artists in the framework of several exhibitions, workshops, round tables and a program with live performances in the public urban space. AFiRiperFOMA will once again provide opportunities for national and international artists, and professional curators to meet, share experiences and continue to support networking and the promotion of critique and analysis of performance coming both from African and international settings.

Organized around the theme “Hacking Conflict: Indonesia meets Nigeria” Biennale Jogja XIII is the third edition of Equator series featuring 34 artists – 23 artists from Indonesia and 11 artists from Nigeria – and collectives – 6 special projects presented at Festival Equator and 8 projects during the Parallel Events. The main exhibition is curated by Woto Wibowo aka Wok the Rock with associate curator Jude Anogwih from Lagos, Nigeria, composing various projects by artists, encouraging collaborations and audience’s participation so as Hacking Conflict could be actually manifested in the exhibition and not merely as an illustrated theme by the artists.

Art Fairs

The 19th edition of Paris Photo will open at Grand Palais in Paris, France from November 12 to 15, 2015.

Over 147 leading galleries from 34 countries will be featured this year at the Grand Palais, presenting both historical and contemporary works. Joining them are 27 publishers and specialized art book dealers providing a complete panorama of the photographic medium. For the first time this year, a selection of galleries will present series and large formats in a new PRISMES sector in the Salon d’Honneur. The Salon d’Honneur will also host guest collector Enea Righi, who will present major works from one of Italy’s most important private collections featuring prominent artists including Cy Twombly, Nan Goldin, and Hans-Peter Feldmann, among others. Accentuating the cultural and social dynamic of the fair, the Paris Photo Platform will reunite key figures in the art world for a 4-day cycle of talks and discussions elaborating upon three axes: the collection, photography after the crisis, and photography and its relation to the book.
