Solo Exhibitions

Lady Skollie: Groot Gat is still on view at Norval Foundation in Cape Town, South Africa until September 15, 2024

In her homecoming exhibition, Groot Gat, Lady Skollie honours her San, Khoi, and Griqua heritage by creating a fantasy world that’s free of colonial influence filled with bold and vibrant cave drawings untouched by time and vandalism. The exhibition’s title not only refers to Boesman’s Gat, a freshwater cave in Kimberley, but also addresses the significant historical gap within the Cape Coloured communities. In Lady Skollies’ works, this cave takes on a new and profound symbolism, as the artist explores concepts related to coloured identity and culture within the context of a post-apartheid South Africa. Her works cleverly use a repetition of colour and pattern to link to the ancient Khoi, San and Griqua practices which involves the repetition of dances and rituals that allows the individual to connect with nature and the spiritual realm. Within her works, the artist often also pays homage to African artists, poets and activists, drawing inspiration from figures who have come before her.

Kingsley Ayogu: If Hives Could Dance in Colors is still on view at SOTO Gallery Space in Lagos, Nigeria until September 21, 2024

Known for his meticulous hyper-realistic portraits, Kingsley Ayogu now embarks on a journey beyond technical mastery, embracing new materials and techniques to explore themes of release, freedom, and self-expression. In If Hives Could Dance in Colors, Kingsley draws inspiration from the metaphor of the hive—an emblem of order and industriousness that also signifies confinement. This series bursts open the hive, revealing a vibrant dance of colors and textures that symbolize the artist’s liberation from convention. Through the introduction of sponges, nets, and layered textures, Kingsley’s work challenges viewers to engage more deeply, moving beyond passive observation to a participatory experience that resonates with the themes of love, care, and visibility.

Clotilde Jiménez: The Long Run is still on view at Mariane Ibrahim in Paris, France until September 28, 2024

The Long Run expands the artist’s explorations of movement, identity, community, and competition, building upon previous works, including the Official Olympic Posters series he created for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Traditional narratives of competition are challenged in works that foreground the importance of solidarity and shared experiences over individual victories. As an artist working in the medium of collage, Jiménez forges bonds between disparate elements, presenting them as a unified whole, mirroring the way athletes embody a fusion of community, nationality, family, and culture. His figures, composed of interlaced gestures and expressions, speak to the interconnectedness of our journeys and how individuals embody collective strength to overcome barriers.
