Wall color and art go hand in hand. Your art will look different depending on the wall that it’s hanged to. The marriage of different colors and styles are the keys to both tasteful space and good art display. But choosing the correct colors can be tricky as your paint color will respond differently when exposed to the light. So we went through to the following process to create a space more emotionally alive.
1. Identify your color palette
Since experiencing color is subjective, you should know from the start which set of colors interests you. You could choose your color depending on the nature of your room, or make a mix of colors on adjacent walls to amplify the display. Whether you want to unify the whole atmosphere or feature your art by contrasting the background, you should not forget that similar colors blend artwork into your surroundings while opposite colors make your art pop off the wall.
2. Shop your paint colors
On your way out to the paint store, don’t forget to take some pictures of your space or art that will stay in your room. It’ll help you to be best served or find faster the right color for your wall. You will probably find a color with multiple variations or shades. We recommend you to always pick a bucket of white just in case the colors you choose read much darker on your walls than in the store. Or you could just pick a lighter variation of the color you want.
3. Verify your light
Returning at your place with your paint chips or buckets, you’re ready to test several samples on your walls. It could be surprising to see how color responds differently depending on the light of the room. First, you should check on what direction your room faces. Then, evaluate your paint swatches over the day to observe how the color will change over the time. Finally, try various lights to see how they affect color and remember that your art is meant to be viewed in natural light.
4. Find your paint finish
Paint will come in several finishes from flat to high-gloss. Your wall will not look shiny with a flat finish but it is ideal to hide imperfections. If you want your walls to have a bit of reflectivity, you should head to an eggshell or satin finish. And to obtain the smoothest finish possible, you can choose to lacquer your wall but this is better with bold colors.
5. Shop your art
When dealing with art that is primarily driven by bold colors, you need to expect that it will make your space brighter. It helps to frame your art before hanging it to your wall. Neutral colors for both the frame and mat tend to work best for any kind of artwork since the frame highlight the work inside it. For instance, an image that is predominantly warm might be suited to a black frame and a beige mat. However, black tends to go with just about anything as with clothing.
Every space is unique and everyone has different design goals and aesthetics.
