Lina Iris Viktor is a conceptual artist who captivates viewers with her strikingly figurative works, which often center on a photography of the artist herself. Her works explore issues of womanhood, identity, and history, and she sees herself as a representation of the human form, which embodies every woman. Using a limited colour palette of black, blue, and pure gold in her pieces, she believes that the precious metal holds the key to unlocking divine knowledge and spiritual connection.

Born in Virginia and raised in England, Viktor is the offspring of prominent Liberians who had to leave their home country in 1980, during the civil war. After graduating she moved to New York to study photography at the School of Visual Arts. She first became immersed in the world of design, and tried her hand at various creative activities including theatre and photography. Then she transitioned to the realm of painting, mainly creating bold and imaginative artworks.

Viktor’s paintings feature her signature baroque style, which combines an extensive use of pure gold with self-portraits. Using an incredibly detailed and luxurious technique, she creates arresting pieces that are near undeniable in their beauty. She describes her work as sculptural, since the materials are piling up on the canvas over time. Her paintings drape her self-portraits in solid blacks, deep blues, and shining gold that skims atop their surface.

Currently working from her studio in New York City, Viktor has exhibited her work in Miami, Boston, London, Lagos, Johannesburg, and will be on view at the New Orleans Museum of Art later this year. Her paintings have also been exhibited alongside the work of artists as illustrious as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Takashi Murakami.
